When I was young and free and my imagination had no limits, I dreamed of changing the world.

在我年輕自由、想象力天馬行空的時候,我曾夢想改變世界.

As I grew older and wiser. I discovered the world would not change, so I shortened my sights somewhat and decided to change only my country.

隨著我日漸成熟,日趨理智,我才發(fā)現(xiàn)世界不可能被改變,于是我降低標準,決定只去改變我的國家.

But, it too, seemed immovable.

但我的國家似乎也無法改變.

As I grew into my twilight years, in one last desperate attempt, I settled for changing only my family, those closest to me, but also, they would have none of it.

當(dāng)我進入遲暮之年,我想孤注一擲,決定只改變最親近的家人,但是,哎!沒有一個人肯去改變.

And now as I lie on my deathbed, I suddenly realize: if I had only changed myself first, then by example I would have changed my family. From their inspiration and encouragement. I would then have been able to better my country and, who knows, I may have even changed the world.

而今,在我臨終之際,我突然意識到：如果一開始我就改變自己,以自己為榜樣,那么我就能依此來改變我的家人.在他們的激勵下,也許我就能讓我的國家變得更加美好,誰知道呢,也許我連整個世界都可以改變呢!
