In Canada and the United States, there is a new group of children called “satellite kids”, who live in one place but whose parents live in another place.

Asians are immigrating to Canada and the United States in larger numbers than ever before. Most Asians immigrate because they believe that they can give their children a better education in the West. In Asia, especially in China, Japan, and Korea, it is difficult to go to university. Students must first pass the strict national examination. However, in Canada and the United States, it is easy to go to university, and anyone who wants to go can go. As a result, Asian parents decide to leave their countries so that their children can go to university.

The problem is that when Asians arrive, they discover that finding a job and making money are more difficult in the West than in the East. Also, they find that they are very lonely, and that they miss their homes. Because of these two reasons, most Asian parents decide to go back to work while their children study in the West. Therefore, these children become “satellite kids”, and most of their parents do not know how sad it is to be a “satellite kid”.

Only until now are Canadians and Americans discovering the “satellite kid”  problem. Because these children do not speak English and because their parents are not there to take care of them, they are often absent from school. To be a “satellite kid” means to grow up in a country where you know you are different and where you cannot make friends because you do not speak English well. Also, it means to grow up lonely, because your parents are elsewhere. What these “ satellite kids” will probably say to their parents is that it’s better to have parents around than to have a university

education.

24.Some Asian parents send their kids abroad because ________________.                          A. they hope their children may easily find a job there                                                    B. the kids may not be accepted by universities in their own countries                        C. all foreign universities are better than the ones in their own countries                    D. the kids want to improve their English and make foreign friends

25.“Satellite kids” refer to the Asian kids ________.                                                      A. without parents                                                                                                             B. living abroad alone C.

 with university education

D. not speaking English

26.Some Asian immigrant children become “satellite kids” because their parents ________.

A. want to leave their own country

B. want them to go to university

C. return to their countries to work

D. want them to be independent

27.What is the main idea of the passage?

A. Parents want a better education for their kids.

B. Parents feel lonely and miss their families.

C. Canadians and Americans begin to notice the “satellite kids” problem.

D. Kids in foreign countries alone are badly in need of care from families.

                                                         C

Money might not grow on trees, but it seems that furniture does! Gavin Munro, a UK-based designer, has come up with a brilliant alternative to cutting beautiful trees and converting them into furniture. He first came up with the idea of growing furniture when he was working as a gardener in California and also made furniture with washed-up driftwood on the side.

After several attempts, he finally managed to develop a model chair using four trees. Munro is now tending to a small 2.5 acre “furniture forest” of 400 trees in a field north of Derby, England. He uses specially designed plastic frames to make young oak and ash trees into the shapes of chairs, tables, frames, or lamps.

A forest that grows furniture sounds like a setting right out of Alice in Wonderland, but there’s nothing magical about it, just a lot of hard work. The forest consists of rows upon rows of trees covered in blue plastic molds, converting them into furniture as they grow. Once they take the desired shape, they are cared for until thick, mature and ready for harvest.

After harvesting, each piece is planned(刨平) and finished to show off the wood grain inside. “It’s an art form in itself, keeping track of everything,” Munro said.

The entire process takes about four to eight years, resulting in fully functional, organic, eco-friendly furniture, and more long-lasting than anything else on the market. They are grown and grafted(嫁接) into one solid piece without any joints that loosen over time. As Munro puts it, “These pieces of furniture could last for centuries.”

Quality isn’t an issue with forest-grown furniture, but maintenance and scalability(可伸縮性) certainly are. For now, Munro expects to grow 50 pieces a year, with the first lot of chairs available for purchase in mid-2017, priced at $3,700 each.

Now many young people are travelling around the world on their own, not because they have no one to travel with, but because they prefer to go alone.

Kristina Wegscheider from California first traveled alone when she was at college and believes that it was something everyone should do at least once in their life. “It opens up your mind to new things and pushes you out of your comfort zone.” Wegscheider has visited 46 countries covering all seven continents.

In foreign countries, with no one to help you read a map, look after you if you get ill, or lend you money if your wallet is stolen, it is challenging. This is what drives young people to travel alone. It is seen as character building and a chance to prove that they can make it on their own.

Chris Richardson decided to leave his sales job in Australia to go traveling last year. He set up a website, The Aussie Nomad, to document his adventures. He says he wished he had traveled alone earlier. “The people you meet, the places you visit, or the things you do, everything is up to you and it forces you to grow as a person,” said the 30year-old.

Richardson describes traveling alone like “a shot in the arm”, which “makes you a more confident person that is ready to deal with anything”. He said: “The feeling of having conquered something on my own is a major part of what drives me each day when I'm dealing with a difficult task. I walk around with my head up because I know deep down inside that nothing is impossible if you try.”

The great 19th century explorer John Muir once said: “Only by going alone in silence can one truly get into the heart of the wilderness.”

32.Why is it challenging to travel alone? A. It will finally build your character. B. You have to make things on your own. C. It is hard for you to prove yourself to others. D. You depend on yourself whatever happens.

33.Which of the following will Kristina Wegscheider agree with? A. Traveling abroad helps people to find new things. B. It is more meaningful to travel in foreign countries. C. It is comfortable to travel around without a friend. D. Traveling alone is a necessary experience for everyone.

34.What can we infer about Chris Richardson? A. He started traveling at an early age. B. He was once shot in the arm. C. He used to work as a salesman. D. His website inspires others a lot.

35.What is the best title for other passage?

A. Travel Wide and Far

B. Travel Unaccompanied

C. Travel Light

D. Travel Abroad

W: Sometimes it’s just too easy. You know you’re doing the “vampire shopping”.

M:  Vampire? The legendary monster which lives off people’s blood? What does it have to do with shopping?

W: Well, this term refers to shopping online late at night — traditionally a time when vampires appear. When you do shopping online late at night, chances are you’re very tired. Tiredness makes you easy to make purchases you’ll regret later.

M:  I can always return the purchase if I don’t like it.

W: Well, actually three-quarters of people don’t send back the things they bought online that they regret. They’re just so ashamed of their bad decisions.

M:  So vampire shopping is bad? But what can I do at night? Do you think watching movies online is a good way of killing time? Or chatting with my friends online maybe?

W: How about reading some books and keeping away from the Internet for a little while?

Text 10 (192) 酒駕的悲劇

M:  The population of my hometown of Csurgo, Hungary used to be more than 6,000, but now less than 5,000 people are living there. Weddings in the town are a cause for great celebration. It is common for a wedding to begin early in the night and go far into the morning. Also, there is a lot of alcohol at these weddings.

My sister and her husband married on August 29th, 2003. My best friend Balazs and I stayed at the party for a long time. We probably drank the most also. At 4 o’clock next morning, the wedding party ended. Balazs arrived home safely. However, shortly after that, his girlfriend invited him to another party. Balazs got into his car and raced to the party. As he crossed over a small bridge, he crashed into a stone barrier. He was travelling at 140 kilometers per hour. The speed limit was only 50 kilometers per hour. Balazs died immediately.

Balazs’ death has a great influence on me. I have never driven after drinking any amount of alcohol since then. I also try to educate others about the dangers of drinking and driving.
