The pure, the bright,the beautiful, 

That stirred our hearts in youth, 

The impulses to wordless prayer,

一切純潔的、輝煌的、美麗的，

The dreams of love and truth; 

The longing after something's lost, 

The spirit's yearning cry,

 The timid hand stretched forth to aid

Be firm,and just ,and true;

So shall a light that cannot fade

 Beam on thee from on high.

出生于海軍小職員家庭

10歲時(shí)全家被迫遷入負(fù)債者監(jiān)獄

11歲就承擔(dān)起繁重的家務(wù)勞動(dòng)

曾在黑皮鞋油作坊當(dāng)童工

15歲時(shí)在律師事務(wù)所當(dāng)學(xué)徒

后來當(dāng)上了民事訴訟法庭的審案記錄員

接著又擔(dān)任報(bào)社派駐議會(huì)的記者

他只上過幾年學(xué)

全靠刻苦自學(xué)和艱辛勞動(dòng)

成為知名作家

狄更斯是高產(chǎn)作家

他憑借勤奮和天賦

創(chuàng)作出一大批經(jīng)典著作
