第一次見到 do bird 這個短語的時候，英子也表示詫異。do= 做， bird = 鳥，那么 do bird 是 “做鳥”的意思嗎？

教了那么久的英語，直覺告訴我一定不是這么簡單！

查閱了詞典和資料，才發(fā)現(xiàn)這個短語真的是非常容易誤導人。

do bird ≠ 做鳥

bird很容易讓人聯(lián)想到關在籠子里的小鳥，而do bird，意思是像鳥兒一樣被關在籠子里，意為“坐牢；服刑”，to spend time in prison.

- He has done bird for 10 years due to his crime.

- 因為他犯的罪，他在牢里蹲了10年。

關于“坐牢”還有一個有意思的表達，也很容易引起人的誤會。do time

I'm doing time ≠ 我在花時間 

有一次，我跟外教閑聊，他說他一個朋友犯事兒了，他說，He's doing time now. 我問這句話是什么意思？什么叫他在做時間？朋友解釋說，這句話的意思是他在蹲監(jiān)獄。

to serve a specific amount of time in prison. 

中文就是：坐牢。

- If you commit crimes, you have to do time. 

- 如果犯罪的話，你就不得不坐牢了。

A little bird told me . 什么意思？

這句話很有意思, 難道是'有只小鳥告訴我?'。這樣理解, 會把老外笑翻的!

a little bird told me是一種非常詼諧的表達, 意思是'有人告訴我, 有小道消息', 當你不想透露某個消息是誰告訴你時, 就說是a little bird told me...

這個說法有個典故:

在《圣經》里, 人類祖先躲在諾亞方舟里, 為了看洪水是否退去, 就派了一只鳥兒去打探, 所以 a little bird 就演變成了消息靈通的人士了。
