In fact, the French “Grandes écoles” and the Chinese “大學(xué)” both literally mean “great schools”: in both nations, these are highly selective institutions that the governments operate to produce elites who will serve as functionaries. Both France and China, unlike the Great Britain or Japan, refuse to submit themselves as subordinates to the US hegemony on the world-stage. Both France and China have great literary traditions that are distinct, rich and diverse. Both Chinese and French people cherish intellectual excellence. The list goes on. In both worlds, business is conducted at the table, over long and lovely meals. You can very easily get French and Chinese talking and taking care of business. In Germany, you’ll find people who are earnestly trying to live shamanically inspired lifestyles, or visit Ashrams in India all the time; in China, there are ardent admirers of certain cultures, as well, and they will devour everything about that culture, travel there, and basically conduct a cult-like thing about it for long stretches of their lives. Often, this actually is about Germany. I was surprised on more than one occasion when someone came up to me and got me involved in a conversation about Marx, in fluent German. When you walk around Beijing, you sometimes get incredicle déja vus of being in Toronto. Well, I do, at least.
