many fellow friends have explained why Chinese people cannot live without a phone. I will add one point here: in China, business is conducted through social media. Employers contact their employees, corporate salesperson makes deals with customers, teachers leave homework to kids, hookers get in touch with bois... They use WeChat. They do not use telephone or SMS messages. Which means that if you don't have a smartphone, you cannot find a job. Straightforward no.

Why should we be surprised? In the past few years China has experienced a huge growth in smartphone sales because many people are buying their very first phone.

For those who don't know, in China, smartphone is an absolute necessity. You cannot survive without a phone, including grade school kids.

And for the majority of Chinese people, who earn less than $400 per month and cannot take more than $50 from their payroll, cheap phones are their only choice. In China, the vast majority of phones sold are $180.

Now everyone has got a phone and they are going into the cycle of upgrade every two year or three. So sales goes down.

Why did it go from no one having a smartphone to everyone needing one so suddenly?

Over the past year (or two), WeChat and Alipay became a huge part of a Chinese day-to-day life with their In-App transactions, using QR code, or scanning a bar code, you pretty much need a smartphone to pay for anything nowadays if you don't want to carry cash. Credit Cards are quickly becoming obsolete there.

Also WeChat is not only used for personal social media, but they're used for majority of business contacts and communications. Even job interviews and offers are conducted thru WeChat.
I even use my mobile phone to access the subway and buses as well.

This is true, everybody in China is paying with a smartphone. They don't even carry their wallets anymore.

What happens when you run of battery? Not carrying wallets can be risky right?

This explains why so many budget phones from Chinese manufacturers have such huge ~4000mAh batteries with slower, power sipping chipsets. While American flagships have smaller ~3000mAh batteries with faster more power hungry chipsets.

Lol not even a mention of Samsung in the whole article

hooluupog
Samsung has 0.8% share in chinese smartphone market.

zexterio
Samsung used to be #1 in the Chinese market like only 4-5 years ago, with 25-30%. I'm sure low-cost Chinese phones played a role, but I also believe it was the Chinese government pushing them aside or requiring more stuff of them to make their devices even more expensive. The drop just seems too big to have happened naturally.

Reminds me of something they bitched about recently...

loercase
You can be damn sure that the Chinese government pushed the market to adopt domestic manufacturers over foreign, be that through tariffs or unreasonable software demands or Lord-knows-what.
And truth be told, it's probably the smart move for them.

As much as people like to diss on Made in China I must admit, they've come a long way.

I have a Xiaomi Mi Mix 2. Best phone I've ever had. Honestly I don't see why I wouldn't have it, because it cost me $400 and hasn't failed me once.
