Hey guys! I always like putting twists or some interesting ideas or facts into the articles I write, and boy do I have some for you guys this week. Even when I was doing a little research on this topic, I realized that there are a lot of words that I’m not too positive where it came from.

This week I want to introduce you guys to some words that American’s always say, but does not come from American. You guys will be interested to learn that these are not American. Okay here we go!

1. Mosquito 蚊子

The biting insect’s name means “l(fā)ittle fly” in Spanish.

2. Sherbet 凍果醬

The fruity frozen dessert’s name came from the Middle East, either from the Turkish ?erbet or from the Persian term sharbat.

3 Lemon 檸檬

The name for the yellow citrus fruit may have originally come from an Arabic term for citrus. In standard modern Arabic, the word for lemon is pronounced “l(fā)aymuun.”

In English, this is the name for a small, usually informal restaurant. It often has small tables, and sometimes there are also tables outside. It is written both with the accent mark (“café”) and without it (“cafe”) in English. “Cafe” comes from the French word for “coffee,” but it’s also very similar to other words related to coffee in many other languages.

Now I know this is not a word, I wanted to put it in this list because this is actually an English sentence that is in its proper English grammar form. A widely accepted etymological explanation is that the phrase is a loan translation* from the Mandarin Chinese phrase "hǎojǐu bújiàn", which means exactly "long time, no see."
