Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.

青春不是年華，而是心境；青春不是桃面、丹唇、柔膝，而是深沉的意志，恢宏的想象，炙熱的感情；青春是生命的深泉在涌流。

Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.

青春氣貫長虹，勇銳蓋過怯弱，進(jìn)取壓倒茍安。如此銳氣，二十后生而有之，六旬男子則更多見。年歲有加，并非垂老，理想丟棄，方墮暮年。

Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.

Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing childlike appetite of what's next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station: so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the Infinite, so long are you young.

When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at 20, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at 80.

Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind. The three passions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither, in a wayward course, over a deep ocean of anguish, reaching to the very verge of despair.

I have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy-ecstasy so great that I would often have sacrificed all the rest of life for a few hours of this joy. I have sought it, next, because it relieves loneliness-that terrible loneliness in which one shivering consciousness looks over the rim of the world into the cold unfathomable lifeless abyss. I have sought it, finally, because in the union of love I have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined. This is what I sought, and though it might seem too good for human life, this is what --- at last--- I have found.

I long to alleviate the evil, but I cannot, and I too suffer.

伯特蘭·羅素（Bertrand Russell，1872-1970）是英國聲譽(yù)卓著，影響深遠(yuǎn)的哲學(xué)家、數(shù)

學(xué)家、邏輯學(xué)家和散文家。他生于威爾士的特萊雷克，就讀于劍橋三一學(xué)院，在其漫長

的一生中完成了40余部著作，涉及哲學(xué)、數(shù)學(xué)、倫理、社會(huì)、教育、歷史、宗教及政治

等許多領(lǐng)域。他早年的成就主要在數(shù)學(xué)和邏輯學(xué)，中年關(guān)注倫理道德、教育、政治，激

勵(lì)和啟發(fā)富有進(jìn)取精神的人。在1921年曾來中國，在北京大學(xué)作過講座。他在1950年

Courage

The courage of life is often a less dramatic spectacle than the courage of a final moment； but it is no less a magnificent mixture of triumph and tragedy． A man does what he must－－－－in spite of personal consequences， in spite of obstacles and dangers and pressures－－－－and that is the basis of all human morality．　　To be courageous…requires no exceptional qualifications， no magic formula， no special combination of time， place and circumstance． It is an opportunity that sooner or later is presented to us all． Politics merely furnishes one arena which imposes special tests of courage． In whatever arena of life one may meet the challenge of courage， whatever may be the sacrifices he faces if he follows his conscience－－－－the loss of his friends， his fortune， his contentment， even the esteem of his fellow men－－－－each man must decide for himself the course he will follow． The stories of past courage can define that ingredient－－－－they can teach， they can offer hope， they can provide inspiration． But they cannot supply courage itself． For this each man must look into his own soul．

生活之中的勇氣，通常不會(huì)像千鈞一發(fā)時(shí)的勇氣那樣充滿戲劇性；但他人不失為是一個(gè)勝利與悲劇的壯觀組合。一個(gè)人將個(gè)人得失，障礙、危險(xiǎn)還有壓力拋在腦后，只是做他必須做的，而這便是人類一切道德的基礎(chǔ)?！　∮赂?，不需要突出的品質(zhì)，不需要秘訣，不需要天時(shí)地利，每個(gè)人或早或晚都有機(jī)會(huì)。政治不過是對(duì)勇氣進(jìn)行特別考驗(yàn)的一個(gè)競技場而已，在人生的每一個(gè)競技場上勇氣都會(huì)前來挑戰(zhàn)。如果你跟隨你的良心，那么任何東西都可能被犧牲：朋友，財(cái)產(chǎn)，滿足，甚至是別人對(duì)你的尊重。走哪條路只能由自己來決定。前人的故事可以告訴你什么叫勇敢。他們能夠教你，能夠給你希望和靈感，但不能給你真正的勇氣，要得到它你必須要發(fā)掘自己的靈魂。
