Career Progression – Promotion 榮耀與責(zé)任并存——淺談職業(yè)晉升的關(guān)鍵要素 文/森海海事服務(wù)公司營(yíng)運(yùn)總監(jiān) Lim Poh Whee Promotion is defined as an act of moving someone to a higher or more important position or rank in an organization. Many companies have their own process in their career progression and most of the established companies have their own career progression system but the common requirements are almost the same. The above requirements are to prepare the staff to understand the role and to be able to handle the duties of the next rank. Most companies review their promotion prospects a few times in a year and those identified will be invited for interview provided they complete the specific company requirements. We have seen many cases of staff who are promoted and failed to live up to the expectations required of the next rank as they are unprepared for the role. In my many years of crewing and watching the career progression of hundreds of sea staff. I have noticed that the current generation including the Chinese sea farers expect to be promoted upon completion of some of the common requirements while some possessed an indifferent attitude and a wrong mindset. This has to change. Life is 10% of what happens to you and 90% of how you react to it! Example, if you did not get promoted because there was no recommendations from your superior and you react negatively, complaining that the superior is being biased. That would be a case of the incorrect attitude and mindset. I would suggest that you reflect on yourself and then manage your superior to get the promotion recommendations. There was a case when I heard the comment that the panel of interviewers only promotes the other nationalities. A candidate with the wrong mindset will think and react this way. I have been involved in numerous promotion interviews and this is never the case. The simple reason is that the candidate has not given the interviewers the comfort level to make them clear him for promotion to the next rank. Attitude is 100% as such possessing the right positive attitude along with positive thinking in the workplace will reflect on what you do onboard and will make you become worthy and that will help in your promotion quest. Your attitude is a form of expression of yourself. Having the above traits better your psychological well-being and will help you cope better under stressful conditions especially that of the top four. Mindset – is your collection of thoughts and beliefs that shape your thought habits. Your thought habits affect how you think/react, what you feel and what you do. , Attitude – is a learned tendency to evaluate things in a certain way. Attitude and Mindset are the most important factors to success. Positive thinking will encourage positive mindset. Get rid of the negative attitude and the negative mindset and I am sure your career progression will be a calm and smooth ahead. The following techniques can help in your career advancement onboard the vessel: 1. Become worthy –For example, a Second Engineer has to absorb and apply all the technical knowledge to be worthy enough to fit into the Chief Engineer’s role and likewise a Chief Officer has to be entirely in control to command over a ship. You must know your job! 2. Excelling at work –For example, when a Second Officer, time after time, performs his navigational duties exceptionally, he someday is sure to get hold of his superior’s eye for a better outcome. 3. Staying up front and volunteering – To enhance credentials, be a volunteer at the workplace. It is always better to exchange your views and experiences that will make your job to be effectively carried out. The management are always on lookout for persons who can handle more responsibilities. To get into their good books, a fourth Engineer for example, can always come up and assist the Third when the generators are being overhauled or look into more of Third Engineer’s duties likewise. But it is also vital that the Fourth Engineer doesn’t shirk away from his current duties. 4. Showcasing leadership – For persons aspiring to get higher ranks on board the ship, it is imperative to highlight one’s strengths and showcase professional leadership qualities. Professionalism at workplace is crucial for one’s success. To get into the Captain’s seat, the Chief Officer has to exhibit abilities to lead and motivate the crew members. He also has to be a team player, respect subordinates, and seed new ideas. A Captain’s profile is full of authority and responsibilities. The person hopeful to become one has to fully merge himself into the role for becoming a responsible leader. 5. Building good interpersonal relations and managing your superiors – It is very noteworthy to build up good personal relations with colleagues, subordinates and of course the superiors. Overall, a good professional image always plays a key role when the management is making decisions for a promotion. 6. Learn new things each day – Learn every day! Life teaches us something that we never thought existed and that too constantly. One must always improve one’s personality and profile by learning newer things and to do so have the right aptitude. Be it a junior officer who is ready to take on whatever comes to get a level higher or an engineering officer who is ready to take on the next senior position, keeping one updated to the latest skills and techniques will only help in improving one’s proficiency. Leave on vacation is no longer a bed of roses. It will be the right time to upgrade yourself with knowledge. 7. Maintain a good track record – Past performance records are always looked at when a company look for promotion candidates in their fleet. 8. Being a self-starter – One should try and recurrently surpass expectations on board ships by taking up professional challenges and turning them into positive and effective outcomes. Staying within an organization and becoming a successful ‘a(chǎn)chiever’ requires one to have the right attitude, dedication to work and a will to succeed. 9. Think like the Next Rank – Many did not do well in their promotion interview as they still think and react to questions as if they are still in their current rank. If you are being interviewed for promotion as a Chief Officer, you must think like a Chief Officer and not answer questions like a Second Officer. These are some of the tried and tested methods to climb the hierarchy level on ships but do remember the ingredients of the correct Attitude and Mindset. |
