邱勇校長:從夢(mèng)想到現(xiàn)實(shí)(Dreams into Reality)

當(dāng)?shù)貢r(shí)間5月4日,清華大學(xué)邱勇校長在英國《泰晤士報(bào)高等教育》(THE)發(fā)表署名文章。邱勇表示,在現(xiàn)代文明中,大學(xué)是傳承文明、播種希望的殿堂,也是孕育夢(mèng)想、創(chuàng)造未來的地方。作為清華大學(xué)的校長,我有信心,清華將會(huì)更創(chuàng)新、更國際、更人文。全球性的舞臺(tái)給予清華更多的機(jī)遇來實(shí)現(xiàn)夢(mèng)想;而提升辦學(xué)質(zhì)量,不僅將確保我們實(shí)現(xiàn)自己的目標(biāo),也將幫助別人實(shí)現(xiàn)他們的夢(mèng)想。






從夢(mèng)想到現(xiàn)實(shí)





100多年前,清華大學(xué)的第一批學(xué)生漂洋過海去美國留學(xué)。今年,在慶祝建校105周年之際,清華園將要迎來首批蘇世民學(xué)者。這100余位來自哈佛、耶魯、普林斯頓、牛津、劍橋等全球頂尖大學(xué)的優(yōu)秀學(xué)子將在8月入住集古典傳統(tǒng)與現(xiàn)代氣息、融東方神韻與西方風(fēng)格于一體的蘇世民書院。


這些蘇世民學(xué)者將在諾貝爾經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)獎(jiǎng)獲得者邁克爾·斯賓塞、意大利“帕西奧利獎(jiǎng)”首位中國獲獎(jiǎng)?wù)?、清華大學(xué)中文系教授汪暉等全球頂尖學(xué)者的指導(dǎo)下,深入觀察了解中國,探究世界發(fā)展的共性問題,為他們成為未來世界的領(lǐng)導(dǎo)者做好充分的準(zhǔn)備。




為應(yīng)對(duì)全球化帶來的挑戰(zhàn)和其他人類所共同面臨的緊迫問題,所有高校都在努力提高自身的全球競爭力。要實(shí)現(xiàn)這一目標(biāo),核心在于提升辦學(xué)質(zhì)量。同時(shí),大學(xué)需要培養(yǎng)青年人才的創(chuàng)新精神和奉獻(xiàn)社會(huì)的激情。


要培養(yǎng)解決全球問題的創(chuàng)新人才,關(guān)鍵在于匯聚大批一流師資,不斷創(chuàng)新課程體系,積極探索國際交流合作的新模式,以提升學(xué)生的國際視野。在師資隊(duì)伍建設(shè)上,清華大學(xué)加大吸引國際頂尖學(xué)者的工作力度,諾貝爾獎(jiǎng)物理學(xué)獎(jiǎng)獲得者楊振寧、圖靈獎(jiǎng)得主姚期智、愛明諾夫獎(jiǎng)獲得者施一公、菲爾茨獎(jiǎng)得主丘成桐等先后到清華任教。


在課程體系建設(shè)上,清華大學(xué)將創(chuàng)新創(chuàng)業(yè)教育融入傳統(tǒng)課程體系。目前,面向本科生開設(shè)創(chuàng)新創(chuàng)業(yè)課程37門,面向研究生開設(shè)相關(guān)課程105門。


在國際化辦學(xué)方面,清華大學(xué)有超過40%的本科生、超過60%的博士生在學(xué)期間有出國學(xué)習(xí)經(jīng)歷,足跡遍布發(fā)達(dá)國家和發(fā)展中國家。清華大學(xué)持續(xù)加強(qiáng)留學(xué)生教育,2015年有來自119個(gè)國家的留學(xué)生3380人。清華大學(xué)還積極探索國際交流與合作新模式,已與全球48個(gè)國家的267所大學(xué)建立了各種形式的合作關(guān)系。2015年6月,由清華大學(xué)、美國華盛頓大學(xué)和微軟公司合作創(chuàng)建的全球創(chuàng)新學(xué)院(GIX)在美國華盛頓州西雅圖正式啟動(dòng),成為中國高校在美國設(shè)立的第一個(gè)實(shí)體性教育科研平臺(tái)。2014年,清華大學(xué)和美國加州伯克利大學(xué)共同創(chuàng)建清華-伯克利深圳學(xué)院(TBSI)。 




清華大學(xué)致力于提升對(duì)社會(huì)的貢獻(xiàn)度。基于自身的科技與創(chuàng)新能力,清華大學(xué)在解決若干重大的經(jīng)濟(jì)社會(huì)問題上作出了貢獻(xiàn)。例如,經(jīng)過30多年的研究,清華大學(xué)已開發(fā)出了更安全可靠的核能新技術(shù),這對(duì)于中國乃至全人類安全使用核能、解決能源問題而言都是突破性的進(jìn)展。


清華大學(xué)特別注重培養(yǎng)學(xué)生的社會(huì)服務(wù)精神。魏華偉就是一個(gè)例子,2008年碩士畢業(yè)后,他主動(dòng)請(qǐng)纓到河南的一個(gè)艾滋病村,一干就是4年多時(shí)間,把一個(gè)貧困落后的農(nóng)村逐漸變?yōu)楦辉5拇迩f。清華還積極承擔(dān)教育扶貧的社會(huì)責(zé)任,為全國各地輸送教育人才和資源。至2016年2月,清華已經(jīng)建立了1156個(gè)教育扶貧現(xiàn)代遠(yuǎn)程教學(xué)站,覆蓋了551個(gè)國家扶貧工作重點(diǎn)縣;為2520個(gè)鄉(xiāng)鎮(zhèn)中小學(xué)開通了在線教育系統(tǒng),累計(jì)培訓(xùn)逾230萬人次。

Dreams into Reality







A little over a century ago, Tsinghua University sent its first group of students to pursue higher education in the US. This year, while celebrating its 105th anniversary, Tsinghua will welcome the inaugural class of Schwarzman Scholars, consisting of more than 100 outstanding graduates from world-renowned universities such as Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Oxford and Cambridge. In August, they will take up residence on the Tsinghua campus in Schwarzman College, a building whose architecture embodies the cross-cultural spirit of both tradition and modernity.


A star team of instructors with rich knowledge of the East and the West has been recruited from around the world – among them Michael Spence, a Nobel laureate in economics, and Wang Hui, the first Chinese recipient of the Luca Pacioli Prize – to teach the incoming Schwarzman Scholars. These young scholars are set to gain an in-depth understanding of modern China and the interdependency of global development in preparation for a leadership role in the world. 


To meet the challenges of globalization and other pressing issues that affect us all, universities strive for international competitiveness. To achieve this, the focus must be on raising the quality of education. At the same time, universities should endeavour to instil in talented young people a spirit of innovation and a desire to contribute to society.


For this, it is essential that universities recruit faculty of worldclass calibre to continually innovate their curricula and evolve their international exchange initiatives to enable students to develop a global vision. Tsinghua has attracted world-leading academics in various fields, including Chen Ning Yang, a Nobel laureate in physics; Andrew Chi-Chih Yao, a recipient of the Turing Award; Yigong Shi, a recipient of the Gregori Aminoff Prize; and Shing-Tung Yau, a Fields medallist.


Tsinghua has fully incorporated innovation and entrepreneurship within the traditional curricula. At present, 37 new courses in the areas of innovation and entrepreneurship are offered to undergraduate students, and 105 to postgraduate students. 


At Tsinghua, more than 40 percent of undergraduates and 60 percent of PhD students gain overseas study experience before graduation. Their study-abroad locations range from developed nations to developing ones. Meanwhile, Tsinghua continues to strengthen its education for international students. In 2015, it enrolled 3,380 international students from 119 countries. Tsinghua also experiments with new international exchanges and collaborations. It has established partnerships with 267 institutes of higher education in 48 countries. In June 2015, it was announced that the Global Innovation Exchange (GIX) would be opened in the Seattle area as a joint institute run by Tsinghua and the University of Washington, with founding support from Microsoft. It was the first time that a Chinese university had established a physical presence in the US. In 2014, the Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute (TBSI) was created in collaboration with the University of California, Berkeley.


Tsinghua is also dedicated to making greater contributions to society. Leveraging its strengths in technology and innovation capacity, Tsinghua strives to offer solutions to our most pressing socio-economic challenges. For example, after continuous research efforts in the past three decades, Tsinghua has developed a new technology for safer nuclear power generation. This is a critical breakthrough that can have a big impact on nuclear power and energy consumption in China and globally.


Tsinghua places great emphasis on cultivating a strong sense of social responsibility among students. Among many examples, Wei Huawei, who graduated in 2008, conducted four years of voluntary work in a remote Aids-hit village in Henan Province and helped to lead this undeveloped village into prosperity. Moreover, as part of efforts to alleviate poverty, Tsinghua allocates people and resources to education across the country. By February 2016, Tsinghua had established 1,156 longdistance education stations covering 551 economically disadvantaged counties, and its online education system connects to 2,520 elementary and middle schools in villages and towns, offering courses to 2.3 million people.


In modern civilisation, a university stands as a temple where cultural legacies are safeguarded and passed on, where the seeds of hope are sown and where dreams are born, nurtured and realised. As president of Tsinghua, I am confident that Tsinghua will be more innovative, more internationalised and more humanity-oriented. A globalised stage provides Tsinghua University with greater opportunities to turn dreams into reality – and raising the quality of education will ensure that we can fulfil our ambitions and can help others achieve theirs.
