1. 句子內(nèi)部指代的翻譯
當(dāng)代詞與其所指代的對(duì)象在同一劃線句中時(shí)，一般來(lái)可以將代詞譯為相對(duì)應(yīng)的代詞。但是如果前面出現(xiàn)多個(gè)名詞，而且從數(shù)量、性質(zhì)等方面很難判斷代詞的指代，則最好將代詞翻譯成相對(duì)應(yīng)的名詞。

98 71） But even more important， it was the farthest that scientists had been able to look into the past， for what they were seeing were the patterns and structures that existed 15 billion years ago.

結(jié)構(gòu)分析：這是一個(gè)復(fù)合句。 But even more important是整個(gè)句子的狀語(yǔ)，it was the farthest是主句，that scientists had been able to look into the past是修飾the farthest的定語(yǔ)從句，for引導(dǎo)原因狀語(yǔ)從句（參見1995年71題），在這個(gè)狀語(yǔ)從句中，what they were seeing是主語(yǔ)從句，were the patterns and structures是狀語(yǔ)從句中的系表結(jié)構(gòu)，that existed…是修飾名詞patterns and structures的定語(yǔ)從句。

2. 句外指代的翻譯

A．對(duì)于指代具體某個(gè)或幾個(gè)名詞的詞，一定要搞清楚他指代的內(nèi)容，譯文中用代詞表示不清的就用名詞來(lái)表達(dá)，哪怕是羅嗦一點(diǎn)也一定要多用名詞，只有在明顯清楚或者找不到合適的名詞才用代詞。P8-74

譯 文： 自由和尊嚴(yán)（它們）是傳統(tǒng)理論定義的自主人所擁有的，是要求一個(gè)人對(duì)自己的行為負(fù)責(zé)并因其業(yè)績(jī)而給予肯定的必不可少的前提。

B． 若是代詞指代的內(nèi)容為前面的某個(gè)句子，需要總結(jié)，則在翻譯的時(shí)候可以以模糊對(duì)模糊，根據(jù)具體情況將該代詞譯為“這種問法，這種說(shuō)法，這個(gè)問題，這種做法…”P7-71

97 71） Actually， it isn‘t， because it assumes that there is an agreed account of human rights， which is something the world does not have.

結(jié)構(gòu)分析：這是一個(gè)多重復(fù)合句。Actually，是副詞做狀語(yǔ)，修飾整個(gè)句子，it isn’t，是主句，在because引導(dǎo)的原因狀語(yǔ)從句中，that引導(dǎo)賓語(yǔ)從句，which引導(dǎo)非限制性定語(yǔ)從句修飾名詞an agreed account，而the world does not have是省略了從句引導(dǎo)詞that的定語(yǔ)從句，修飾something。

譯 文： 事實(shí)并非如此，因?yàn)檫@種問法是以人們對(duì)人的權(quán)利有共同認(rèn)識(shí)為基礎(chǔ)的，而這種共同認(rèn)識(shí)并不存在。

“It isn‘t”看來(lái)非常簡(jiǎn)單，但真正翻譯起來(lái)卻不那么容易，因?yàn)樗袃蓚€(gè)難點(diǎn)：一是代詞It指代什么？二是Isn’t 后面省略了什么？如果只是譯成簡(jiǎn)單的“它不是”，譯者和讀者恐怕都會(huì)覺得莫名其妙。前面說(shuō)過，弄清楚代詞的指代內(nèi)容一定要參見前文，而現(xiàn)在句中還有省略，那就更應(yīng)該參見前文了。前面說(shuō)“動(dòng)物有權(quán)利嗎？問題經(jīng)常這樣提出，這種提問方式聽上去是一種有用的、能把問題講清楚的開場(chǎng)白。” 句中的it 應(yīng)該和前文中提到的it一樣都表示“這種提問”，isn’t后面省略的內(nèi)容也應(yīng)該和前句的一樣。因此這個(gè)句子補(bǔ)充完整之后就成了it isn’t a useful， ground-clearing way to start.由于表語(yǔ)太長(zhǎng)，重復(fù)顯得羅嗦，我們這里可以抓住最關(guān)鍵的詞，而形容詞ground-clearing（把問題講清楚的）正好是這個(gè)關(guān)鍵詞，所以補(bǔ)充的簡(jiǎn)單一點(diǎn)就是it isn’t a ground-clearing way，譯成“這種提問并沒有把問題講清楚”。
